Electrical metallic tubing (EMT), often referred to as thin-wall, is a type of conduit used to protect electrical wiring. It is typically preferred over galvanized rigid conduit (GRC) because it is less expensive and lighter. EMT is not threaded like GRC, but it can be used with threaded fittings that secure the conduit by clamping around it.Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT), commonly known as thin-wall, is a steel raceway with a circular cross-section, unthreaded, and typically available in 10-foot lengths, though 20-foot lengths can also be found. It conforms to various standards, including Article 358 of the NEC, UL797, CSA C22.2 No. 83.1, and ANSI C80.3, and is available in trade sizes ranging from 1/2" to 4".Both the interior and exterior of EMT are galvanized to provide corrosion resistance. EMT is installed using set-screw or compression-type couplings and connectors, which secure the tubing to other sections or equipment.
